The Good Good Callaway ad has turned into one of golf's biggest advertising controversies, but Brett Smith is not here to do the cheap outrage lap.

Bob Labbe’s putting idea starts with a simple measurement: how far the ball travels for each inch the putter is drawn back. In this episode, the engineer behind Putting by the Numbers explains the “individual power factor,” a personal number based on each golfer’s own stroke. He says the system does not require changing how a player holds the putter; it turns the shoulder-rocking motion every putter uses into a practical way to plan long putts.

On Oregon Golf Podcast, the conversation focuses on why Labbe wanted lag putting to be more than feel. After selling his second air pollution control company in 1996, he threw himself into golf with an early routine of 18 holes three days a week and practice three days a week. Most of the bag came along quickly, but long-distance putting did not. Three- and four-putts were damaging his score, so he approached the problem like an engineer.

That led to Putting by the Numbers, Labbe’s quantitative lag-putting system designed to make long-distance putting accurate, repeatable and confidence-building. He says the key is knowing your own power factor rather than assuming every golfer sends the ball the same distance with the same retraction. As an example, he described his summer home-course number as 20 feet of travel per inch of putter retraction, while his wife sends the ball 11 feet per inch with her stroke.

Labbe emphasizes that the system still depends on execution. The point is not to remove practice; it is to give recreational and amateur golfers a repeatable plan for getting long putts close enough that the next putt becomes manageable. He spent roughly 25 years developing and proving the method before writing the book because, in his view, it had to be tested enough to be true, real l across different putting conditions.
